It's not so much a question of what catholics believe as an ALLEGED quote by the Blessed Virgin Mary. What is interesting about the ongoing apparitions in medjugorje is that if anyone has the connections they can assemble a team of experts and study the phenomena for themselves. You don't get many chances like that. Aside from that all we can do is rely on the conclusions of the three scientifc teams than have done so including the first which was led by an atheist and one of the leading medical experts in the world. It was an attempt by the yugoslavia government to discredit the apparitions. This was after the yugoslavian air force had bombed medjugorje in a final attempt to end the apparitions. There have been attempts by governments to end religious worship and practices notably communism which is and was an attack on our political systems and god or the belief in god. Anyway the first team concluded " In summary , the unique aspect of the results of the scientific investigations point to the conclusion that nothing in the physical realm is allowed to interfere with the apparition experience. Scientific experts have define the phenomena as a state of active , intense prayer , partially disconnected from the external world , a state of contemplation whom they alone can see , hear and touch ". That was written by an atheist. The third commission of 17 internationally reknowned experts concluded " the foremention commission confirms the conclusions of the previious international commissions , who for their part , proved that apparitions to which the visionaries testify , are a phenomena which SURPASSES modern science and that ALL points to another level of happening ". I'm not saying it is the Blessed Virgin Mary but pointing studies and evidences that exist out there and there are some . It is interesting to note that when it comes to miracles , aside from medical miracles used in granting sainthoods , the church will usually investigate these matters from 100 to 500 years. If the church were to officially recognize a miracle { and it has only recognized 3 general miracles in its long history - lourdes , fatima and guadulape } and later have that miracle exposed as a fraud it would severely damage the credibility of the church as well as being considered an act of evil. From what i gather { and its difficult to know these things } it is an exhaustive and excruciating process the likes of which we have never seen before.
