infamous: I know that this site needs funding, but man... all this porno advertisement PISSES me off. I used to log on to this site at school and read up, because this IS a support group so there isn't really much concern. Yet i find it difficult to argue now since at the bottom of the screen there is a "buttmachineboy" being fucked >:(

mindseye: You should consider discussing this in Administrative Issues instead of Meet and Greet.

That said, Mark's kept this place free of charge for over three years now, footing the bill from his own pocket when the site outgrew its old ISPs. As explicit as the new banners are, they're less obnoxious at the bottom of the page than they would be at the top of the page; and they're much less obnoxious than pop-up ads.

If you have a constructive alternative for covering the site costs, you should propose it.

Ugh...Pop ups. One of my biggest web gripes. And have you ever noticed that pop-up ads are typically a seizure-inducing animation of showing the same RGB cycle over and over again? Webmasters should save the seizures for Pokemon.

I'm curious... I still hear people complaining about pop ups these days, but they're really easy to stop. So, what keeps people from doing something to stop them? (Like installing a blocker or using another browser like Mozilla or Opera.)

mindseye: That's blame-shifting. It's like saying, "If you don't like rape, why not wear a chastity belt?"

I can (and do) block pop-ups, but to do so (1) forces me to install additional software on my computer, using up resources that could be used for something else, (2) limits my choice of what browsers I can use.

Stop whining.

You would have to be a complete idiot not to think that some advertising would not creep into a free site.

If you don't like it, FUCK OFF.

jerkin4-10: the web browser 'mozilla', downloaded in its complete form blocks popups...but its a tad slower, at least the version i have is... :)

dancinfool: well, for as much as this sight needs funding, I do think that it is a bad idea to advertize so much porn and so many sex toys. this IS a support group, so shouldnt the ads be a little more tasteful? i dont like pop-up anymore than anyone else, and i dont want them either. if you have to put up advertizements, at least put up ones that arent so graphic. although this is an 18+ site, it shouldnt have to be. this support group goes well beyond just adults, and i would love to see it be run like the forums at sex-project.com, age limit free and apropraite.

if you want to show porn, open a porn website. if you want to post pictures of your dick, make the yahoo group 18+, i see no reason, other than the advertizements, why this site is 18+

tomarctus: I use MacOSX and Apple's browser Safari with the pop-ups blocked. It works fine for me. However, since this is a no-pay site, ads shouldn't be a surprise. I still see the ad at the page bottom and don't mind it as long as the ad revenue helps keep this forum available to the biggest :) number of people.
Taste is relative. I'm gay but I don't mind the straight ads.
Even though most of us simply have a really good time on this forum it has a serious core - large penis support. Let's keep perspective. the moderators seem to do a pretty good job here.

I agree, the ads are fine, but the quality of these ads leave a lot to be desired. I too use Safari so I would also prefer popups.

Well, I've started using Opera to avoid pop-ups. But sometimes I have to log in to a public terminal.

About blockers...If you like spyware, go ahead and download them.

I'm finding the advertising of late to be nearing the "borderline" of what I find totally acceptable, too.

But then, I remember the more than several times this site "disappeared" (for weeks and weeks) when times were tough with ownership changes and NO sustaining income to keep the site up and running.

THOSE were difficult weeks to get through. I didn't have any way of knowing when and if (ever) the LPSG would return at all...I had no close LPSG friendships established (i.e. via other e-mail opportunities) to even inform me what the heck had happened during the dark periods. Those of you newcomers who love this site so much now just think how much you'd miss it if you suddenly couldn't bring up the site on the net! Like---AT ALL! ---no matter how hard you tried! THAT'S what it was like for weeks and (once, I believe), like half a year or more, I think it was. --AWFUL times to remember.

While sensitive to the "kind" of advertising we might be seeing, we might also give thought as to how difficult it must be to FIND advertising which would accept, identify with, and otherwise "tie-in" with the subject matter we get into around here. Major (easily recognized, "main-stream America" corporate advertisers like "John Q. Public" citizens would ordinarily see sponsoring other sites) are NOT very likely to be inclined to support and underwrite a website about the woes of having a big penis! I don't expect to see Nabisco, Ford Motors, or Wachovia stepping up with sustaining advertising here anytime soon. ;)

Honestly, I'm surprised Mark has been able to do as well as he has and, for as long as he has! --And, not to mention the innovations he's added to the site! I'd keep a headache everyday, I believe. I used to "sell and recruit" sponsorships in broadcasting. It's not easy, believe me.

We can't have the LPSG totally perfect by virtue of all the facts considered here-- regarding what we're talking about in subject matter alone AND the diversity of our membership. Someone is always going to be slightly concerned or slightly "ticked".
--That's life, I suppose.

I'm trying to bite my lip when I feel offended and realize I'd rather have this site available as to NOT having it at all.

The only other option (instead of sustaining advertising) would be a PAID membership approach. We've come close to that too, in our troubled past.

NOT all that popular an idea, from what I can recall.

Well, that wasn't my intent...just a legitimate question as to why people keep allowing pop ups when -- to me, at least -- they're so easy to stop. I've been using Mozilla for a year now with no regrets and have completely forgotten what Pop-Up Hell was like. It's bliss.

As to limiting your choice of software, I think the only finger you can point there is to Bill Gates -- IE should've had a pop-up blocker ages ago (among other things), but they've rested on their laurels now that they're the dominant browser.

Asking Webmasters to stop running pop-up ads is like telling burglers to stop breaking into your house. Sure, it's infringing on my rights and freedom of choice, but I'd rather keep my door locked at night.
