Um, I think I'm missing the joke.

Cobbe was an alternative word for spider (wiki tells me its origins are Dutch) - a cobweb is a spiderweb.

I've never heard the thing about butter. I have a feather duster I deploy on the end of a broomhandle from time to time.

What joke? I am seriously asking out of bored interest.

Now if this were true, wouldn't I be seeing spiders? Maybe that only applies in the land of windmills and dykes...

A cobweb is a spider web. Nothing more, nothing less.

Cobbe is also the word for spider in my Dutch dialect. The word is only used in West-Flanders anymore.
Our word for cobweb is "cobbenette" (="cobnet")

And that's my why I love studying Germanic languages. Old words are often very similar.
