Cobwebs

A few things-Where do they come from? Why are they upon first glance so similar to spider webs? Is it true that keeping butter coating the corners of the ceiling will kepp them from forming?

is part of a discussion in the Et Cetera, Et Cetera forum that includes topics on Off-topic postings, current events, rants and raves....

What can the people here tell me about cobwebs?

Um, I think I'm missing the joke.

Cobbe was an alternative word for spider (wiki tells me its origins are Dutch) - a cobweb is a spiderweb.

I've never heard the thing about butter. I have a feather duster I deploy on the end of a broomhandle from time to time.

What joke? I am seriously asking out of bored interest.

Now if this were true, wouldn't I be seeing spiders? Maybe that only applies in the land of windmills and dykes...

What you and your boyfriend do in your boudoir is your own business-I really don't need to know how he achieves liftoff.

A cobweb is a spider web. Nothing more, nothing less.

MB is correct. A spider web, spiderweb, spider's web or cobweb (from the obsolete word "coppe", meaning "spider" [1]) is a device built by a spider out of proteinaceousspider silk extruded from its spinnerets. Insects can get trapped in spider webs, providing nutrition to the spider; however, not all spiders build webs to catch prey, and some do not build webs at all.

A cobweb is the same as a spiderweb. It's just that the spider isn't home.

Odd factoid: caffeine and other drugs when administered to spiders cause them to make non linear, asymmetric webs.

No, because if you have butter on your ceiling I think you are wasting precious butter so I give you double cobwebs.

Cobbe is also the word for spider in my Dutch dialect. The word is only used in West-Flanders anymore.
Our word for cobweb is "cobbenette" (="cobnet")

And that's my why I love studying Germanic languages. Old words are often very similar.
