In Alex's defense, he may simply not know what he's talking about. Private messages are called "Private Messages" because only the sender and recipient (and the site owner, if he chooses) can see them. But the recipient is under no obligation to keep the message private, absent some agreement between them to the contrary. "Private" is a term of art.
I always wonder whether those screaming "OMGZ, PMs can't be reposted, it's illegal" have something to hide. Anyway, the moral isl: Don't send PMs that you wouldn't be comfortable seeing posted publicly (and that's not a bad way to conduct yourself in general, either).
