Hey Jason, when I'm helping friends edit work what I always tell them is once you've finished it leave it for three days, then go back and take out every word that you feel doesn't add anything to it. You're right that short stories are hard, in something the size of a novel you can afford to have long meandering passages, I feel in a short story every word should count.
